Grow in my current career

Start by naming the next role or responsibility you want, then compare it honestly with what you do today. The gap between the two is your development plan.

Find the gap

Look at a job advert for the role one step above yours. Highlight every requirement you already meet in one colour and every requirement you don’t yet meet in another. The second colour is your list.

Questions to ask your manager

  • What would you need to see from me to consider me for the next level?
  • Which project could I take on in the next three months to show that?
  • Is there budget or study leave for development?
  • Who in the team could I learn from?

Make it visible

Keep a simple monthly note of what you delivered, what you learned and who you helped. It makes performance conversations much easier.

Skills-gap exercise

Copy this into a notebook or your phone.
